As good stewards of God’s creation, it’s crucial that we reduce our carbon emissions as much as possible. However, there are always some emissions that can’t be avoided. You can use the BMS World Mission carbon calculator to offset your carbon usage, and fund BMS projects supporting communities who face challenges every day because of climate change. Use the calculator right away, or scroll down to learn more about how it works and how your donations will make a difference.
How does it work?
First of all, choose the area of your life you’d like to offset – it could be your commute to work, your eating habits or your household spending. You can also use the calculator as often as you’d like and it might be helpful to offset specific events, such as Christmas or your summer holiday. Once you’ve chosen, head to the carbon calculator and see what information you need to input – it could be the length of a journey between airports or the amount of meat you eat in a week. If you can’t work out the specifics, don’t panic – an estimate will do!
Once you’ve inputted all your information, you’ll be given an amount to donate to offset your carbon. Simply click the button to donate!
What your offsetting achieves
Your generous donations are helping communities facing the effects of climate change every day. So far, your support has funded solar panels for two desert hospitals in Chad, reducing the risk of dangerous power cuts, and helping provide crucial healthcare for vulnerable communities. In contexts where most electricity is provided by unreliable and polluting diesel generators, these solar panels could not be more valuable.
You’re also helping farmers in Uganda who are suffering the effects of deforestation. During the Ugandan civil war, many trees were cut down and never replanted, meaning that now families are seeing serious damage done to their homes and crops when huge storms hit. Planting more trees will not only act as a wind barrier around people’s homes, but will also help combat increasing levels of carbon being released into the atmosphere and improve soil fertility.
