Action Team Photo Competition 2020

This is the world through their eyes:

The 2020 Action Team Photo Competition

Action Teams is the BMS World Mission gap year with a difference, and each year, we ask the young people who serve overseas to get behind the lens and capture the best of mission on the frontline for our photo competition. They sent in these photos to inspire, yes, but also because of the stories behind them. Of all they shared and experienced this year, this is what they wanted you to see.

Behind each of these pictures is a team of passionate young people, dedicated to sharing the good news of Christ’s love on their gap year. We hope you can see God’s incredible creation in these photos, and that they encourage you to see God’s handiwork in your every day, just like these Action Teamers did. We hope you enjoy the winners of the Action Team Photo Competition 2020!

First place: Street Barber

Street barber in Delhi. Winner of the 2020 Action Teams Photo Competition.
Taken by Miriam, Team Delhi.

Congratulations to Miriam of Team Delhi, for taking the wonderful winning photo!

“When we first arrived in India, we were struck by the number of street barbers and thought they perfectly summed up the efficient chaos of what we saw in India,” said Miriam on her inspiration behind taking the photo.

The judges loved the personality shining through the barber’s face. “I was really drawn to this photo because I think we’ve all developed a greater appreciation for the incredible skill of barbers and hairdressers, like this man, during our time in lockdown,” said one of the judges. Well done Team Delhi!

Second place: Children at the Window

Well done to Team Kolkata on scoring second place!

“I was taking photos of the school we served in and church it was connected to,” said Zoe, who captured this wonderful image. “I just loved the way the boys were sitting, watching the craziness of the after-lunch rush around them.”

The judges were really struck by the colours in the photo and loved how Zoe captured this moment of quiet in the middle of busy school life. Congrats Team Kolkata!

Third place: The Cross

The judges loved this photo taken by Team Kosovo. Congrats on getting third place!

“I was really impressed with how the photographer managed to capture such a simple yet powerful insight into life in Kosovo,” said one of the judges. “In a country where much of BMS work is sensitive, it’s so inspiring to know that Christ’s love is being displayed like this.”

Well done Team Kosovo!

The Action Team photo competition winners are revealed!

The winning photos that focus on BMS World Mission’s global work.

The judges searched for photos which capture a moment, something of God’s glory and BMS work across the world. Action Teams sent in their reel of top fifty photos and the judges picked their top ten, revealing the runners up last week. And now, here are the winners of the Action Team photo competition. Enjoy looking at these stunning photos and reading the stories behind these moments in time!

3rd place: Letting go into the New Year

The Thailand Action team send a lantern into the night sky to celebrate New Year on their gap year. An Action Team photo competition submission.
Taken by Jonny, Team Thailand.

The judges loved the sense of movement in this photo and the striking colours. “It was the most significant New Year’s Eve I’ve ever had,” said Jonny, describing how thousands of lanterns filled the sky that night. “People wrote dreams, hopes and highlights on their lanterns but we turned ours into a prayer, thanking God for the past year.” This snapshot of a spiritually important moment for Team Thailand earned them a fantastic third place!

Team Thailand joined BMS church planters Wit and Helen Boondeekhun, working to plant a church in the 100% Buddhist community of Wang Daeng. Read their story here.

2nd place: Kolkata flower market

A bustling flower market in Kolkata. An Action Team photo competition submission.
Taken by Erin, Team Kolkata.

Erin of Team Kolkata caught this fantastic shot of people preparing for the festival of Diwali in a Kolkata flower market. At the bottom, there’s a winding procession of people carrying bags of flowers whilst at the top are people buying their flowers. In the middle, market traders have displayed their items for sale.

“We didn’t expect anything to be there because we arrived late in the afternoon, but when we got there the market was bubbling with life!” Erin commented. The judges loved how you can feel the busy, bustling atmosphere even in this photographic still. It’s a well-executed action shot. Congratulations on coming second, Team Kolkata!

1st place: Temple in Jaipur

A woman in a purple sari clambers towards a Hindu temple to worship. An Action Team photo competition submission.
Taken by Cody, Team Delhi.

Our winner is… Team Delhi! With an impressive double appearance in the list of runners up and managing to bag the winning prize, Team Delhi can count themselves proud. This artistic photo of a woman entering a Hindu temple portrays the context of BMS work in India, a country of many different faiths.

Cody spotted this photo opportunity before hopping off the bus. “There was such a contrast between the colours of the woman’s sari as she went to worship and the sky. I quickly rummaged around in my bag to find my camera and took a picture just in time!” The judges repeatedly came back to this photo and its captivating moody sky. Congratulations to Team Delhi!

The reel doesn’t end there though. There were so many photos we liked, we had to create a list of Honourable Mentions! Check them out below and if you missed the list of runners up, you can find them here. Thank you to the Action Teams for all your submissions!

The reel deal

The reel deal:

Our annual showcase of overseas mission

One gap year of a lifetime. Seven Action Teams serving God overseas. Ten photos from a reel of 350. The judges have decided.

Welcome to the Action Team photo competition. It’s our annual showcase of the most stunning snapshots capturing God’s creation and BMS World Mission work across the world. Every year a group of incredible young people aged 18 to 23 dedicate a year to overseas mission through the BMS gap year, Action Teams. This year’s Action Teams spent six months in countries across the world, from Peru to India, their experiences captured in the striking photos below.

The judges spent many hours deliberating before settling on the top ten. Check out the seven runners up below, and stay tuned as we announce the winners next week. New perspectives, moving stories and artistic talent were amongst the judges’ criteria. We hope that their amazing selection will leave you reeling…

The judges loved the dark grey contrast next to bright oranges, yellows and reds. The shot is an artistic take on Peruvian cooking.

This picture is a beautiful example of ‘crown shyness’. It’s where the crowns of fully-grown trees don’t touch each other and leave channel-like gaps in the canopy. Jonny from Team France, took this in a neighbouring forest in Gif-sur-Yvette.

“We were in France over autumn, and saw the seasons changing. It reflected how God was changing us and working in us,” says Taf, Jonny’s teammate.

In the park

A man tending to a bush in a park in India, next to a tree and a bench.
Taken by Cody, Team Delhi

The light filters through the leaves so beautifully in this photo, and the man tending to the bush shows a loving care for God’s creation. Cody, who took the photo, said: “He was working so hard and in the midday sun. We could learn a lot from him.”

Be still and know he is God

Branches floating in a lake with mountains in the background
Taken by Hermione* and Sarah*, Team Kosovo

“We were wowed by the beauty of the lake and the bizarre way we ended up there,” Niamh*, a Team Kosovo member, says. She explains that, if the team hadn’t got lost on their way to the lake, they would have never seen it in such a beautiful light, and the sense of peace when they arrived wouldn’t have been so strong.

Taken in an area of the world that has seen so much unrest, the photo is a metaphorical moment of calm in the storm. The team chose to name their photo accordingly: ‘Be still and know he is God’.

Peek a moo

Close-up of a cow's face with a wall and bridge in the background
Taken by Cody, Team Delhi

What a shot! This is a funny photo which was an udder success with the judges! They also liked how the lines of the bridge and wall frame the cow’s friendly face.

It’s Paris, but not as we know it. Just before this picture was taken, Team France were challenged by witnessing the end of a Yellow Vests protest, in which a car was set on fire. Aptly, this photo presents a new perspective of Paris.

Children in the church with no roof

Three children with different expressions sitting down in front of a grey wall
Taken by Bethan, Team Peru

This really is a moment in time. Each child’s expression is characterful and unique as they wait for a Bible study to begin in Ica, Peru in a church with no roof. The photo means a lot to the team as they learnt much from the church’s resilience and resourcefulness.

That’s it, folks. Congratulations to our runners up! We’ll see you again next week when we announce the winners!

The most inspiring young people you’ll meet all year: Action Team Tour 2019

Action Team Tour 2019:

The most inspiring young people you’ll meet all year

Get young people from your church passionate about mission!
Bring them to the Action Team Tour 2019

There’s no stopping them! They’ve brought people to Jesus in Peru, they’ve inspired children in Mozambique, they’ve even moved people to meet Christ in Buddhist parts of Thailand. And now our seven amazing teams of young people are coming to a church near you – it’s the great Action Team Tour of 2019!
Inspire your  young people to go on their own Christian gap year.

Team Peru – Bethan, Becky, Katie and Marika
Team Peru – Bethan, Becky, Katie and Marika
BMS Action Teams: a Christian gap year jam-packed with adventure.
  • Open to 18 to 23-year-olds
  • A month’s training, followed by six months serving overseas
  • Two months in the UK visiting churches on tour

We can say with absolute certainty that lives across the world have been transformed through Action Teams this year. Team Mozambique has taught vital English skills to local children. Team Kolkata has supported projects helping women find employment. Team France has shown how to live out faith boldly in a secular nation. Every single one of these young Christians has leapt out of their comfort zone.

And they’ve been used by God to leave an eternal legacy.

In inner-city Peru, where drug addiction, homelessness and poverty are rife, three people gave their lives to Christ after the Peru Action Team spent a morning on the streets sharing the good news! And in rural Thailand, BMS worker Wit Boondeekhun has amazing news: against all odds, in an almost entirely Buddhist village, a young woman called Prang has come to know Jesus. How did she become interested? Through a friendship with the Thailand Action Team!

Wow – talk about transformation! Could you see the young people in your fellowship doing great things like this? Anyone can hear these inspiring stories from our 2019 Action Teams, by catching them on tour.

Team Thailand – Anna, Jonny, Keziah and Paul
Team Thailand – Keziah, Jonny, Anna and Paul

Action Teams are hopping on trains, cars and buses to visit churches from Aberdeen to Torquay, from 22 April to 17 June 2019. They’ll spend a week with each church, sharing stories of their time overseas, and no doubt eating great food and drinking plenty of tea along the way. Sounds superb, doesn’t it?!

And the best part is, you can get involved! We’d LOVE for you (and the young people from your church) to have a chance to meet these amazing young people, so we’ve listed the tour dates for each team below. Contact the nearest church to you, and take your youth group along to hear them speak.

Don’t miss your chance to meet the teams, and prepare yourself to be inspired!

The top 10: Action Team photo competition 2018

The top 10:

Action Team photo competition 2018

We bring you the finalists in the annual BMS World Mission Action Team photo competition.

Be warned, you’re about to be bitten by the gap year bug. We certainly were as we looked at the Action Team photos submitted by the class of 2017/18, though sadly most of us are beyond our gap-year years! If you know anyone who isn’t old like us and might want to do a Christian gap year in places like these, share this story with them! They could be our next crop of Action Teams

We loved judging these photos. And, after much debate (it went on for hours), we finally picked our top ten. They are beautiful.

Tenth place: Nepal

A mountain isin the distance, while in the foreground is a bench, with sunlight shining on it
What a stunning sight this is. We adored this photo of the Annapurna Himalayas the moment we saw it.

Rachel Paton will never forget this view from a five-day trek in the Annapurna Himalayas.

“As we got ready to begin our descent early in the morning, the sun filled the valleys with a golden haze,” says Rachel. “I was overwhelmed with a sense of how privileged I’d been to see sights such as these.”

Ninth place: Nepal

A woman in red clothing, crouches behind a statue, pinching a cigarette in her fingers
This candid shot of a woman smoking a cigarette was taken when the Nepal Action Team were visiting a temple.

This woman was begging at the foot of a temple staircase in Bhaktapur, a town east of Kathmandu. And then for a moment, she retreated behind an enormous stone statue just as Rachel Paton took her picture.

“She seemed to be hiding; weary, perhaps, of being visible but often ignored by so many people passing by,” says Rachel.

Eighth place: Guinea

Children sit behind desks as a teacher writes on a chalkboard
Children fill a classroom in Guinea, though just like in classrooms around the world, concentrating all the time is not possible for every child.

There are over 80 young children packed into this preschool classroom in Guinea. Teaching assistant and Guinea Action Team member Eleanor Hyde found space somehow to take this photo of the children’s eagerness to learn.

“They jump up to show you their work, and with huge smiles encourage you to keep teaching them,” says Eleanor. “These are God’s children, gifted and purposed.”

Seventh place: Nepal

Small blue boats on a lake with mist in the distance
This picture from Nepal captured our attention because of its beauty and the sense of tranquillity.

The serenity of Phewa Lake in the Pokhara Valley was captured by Rachel Paton (she really did take a lot of great photos!), with its stillness contrasted by what was happening behind her.

“There were tourists out for a stroll, locals using the lakeside footpath, Tibetan refugees selling handcrafted jewellery, and women washing clothes at the edge of the water,” says Rachel. “It is a wonderful place to visit.”

Sixth place: Nepal

Children in blue clothing smile and laugh as they pull on a flag
It is play time at a Nepal school, with these young children having the time of their lives.

Children couldn’t contain their excitement when this parachute was brought out at a rural school in Nepal. And Action Teamer and gifted photographer Rachel Paton was there to capture the joy.

“We had to work hard to convince them that this particular parachute was not to be used for flying, just for playing with on the ground!” says Rachel.

Fifth place: Guinea

Children in the distance wade through water
Children on a small island off the coast of Guinea head into the water in search of fish to catch.

Guinea Action Teamer Mhairi Cole was on a small island off the African nation’s coast when she saw a group of children being given a fishing lesson.

“They proudly presented their huge catch,” says Mhairi. “And then later on, we had the opportunity to try some. I would give the fish a five-star rating!”

Fourth place: Mozambique

A young child peers behind a tree in Mozambique
This adorable scene during a game of hide-and-seek was captured in Mozambique.

Who doesn’t love a game of hide-and-seek? The children Action Teamer Rhiannon Cleghorn met in Mozambique clearly do. And though this boy had only trees to hide behind when Rhiannon was playing, it meant an adorable photo of him could be taken.

Third place: Mozambique

A man and a woman walk on a beach at sunset
Along with great need and a history of conflict and colonial oppression, Mozambique has glorious beaches enjoyed by local people every day. They are even more stunning as the sun sets, as this image shows.

Living by the coast was one of the biggest blessings for the Action Team in Mozambique, says Rhiannon Cleghorn.

“Sunday afternoons were spent at the beach playing football and making some of our best friends,” she said. “To top it all off, the sunsets were always serious ‘creation appreciation’ experiences.”

Second place: Nepal

Bells of different sizes hang from a pole, with a mountain range in the background.
These prayer bells in Nepal were wonderfully captured with the contours of the valley in the background.

This is a photo that makes you want to stand where photographer Rachel Paton did. She took this photo at the iconic Buddhist temple, Swayambhu, which is on top of a hill in the Kathmandu Valley.

“We were up there as the sun was setting, and the evening light striking this row of bells caught my attention just before we started to head down,” she says.

And the winner is: Nepal

An elephant with a trunk painted with colours looks at the camera
This photo, taken in Nepal by Rachel Paton, caught our attention straight away.

What a striking photo this is, and an obvious first place in this year’s Action Team photo competition. It was captured in Nepal by Rachel Paton (who else?!), and shows the beauty of God’s work in the form of this majestic elephant, Mayabhati.

“Three men were responsible for her around-the-clock care,” says Rachel. “It was amazing to see her, just as it was amazing to learn about the unique relationship that people in Nepal have with these parts of the country.”

Congratulations not only to those in the top ten, but to everyone who submitted a photo. You’ve inspired, moved and challenged us, and reminded us all of how magnificent God’s creation is.

Do you know a future Action Teamer?

Our Action Teams programme is one of the best Christian gap year programmes out there. If you know anyone aged between 17 and 23 who wants to serve God overseas then encourage them to get in touch with us today. You never know, they might just make next year’s photo competition top ten!
