Student Placements

Apply your learning in a mission context.

Overseas placements are a great opportunity to put your study into practice: to use your time to both learn and develop new professional skills, while also serving others.

Whatever your academic discipline it might be possible for you to spend part of your course in an overseas placement related to your studies.

Medical electives:

BMS partner with a hospital located in Tansen, Nepal who have an excellent programme for medical students. The hospital takes a holistic approach, offering spiritual, mental and physical support as well as clinical treatment. You can have the opportunity to watch and learn about medical work in Nepal, as well as experiencing life, the local people and the culture.

‘I had an exceptionally rewarding time in Nepal. I learned a lot about medicine in a developing country…life as a missionary…Nepali culture…Nepali language and maybe a little about God’s plan for me.’

Patrick, medical elective, Nepal

You will be encouraged to choose two specialities to focus on during your time in Tansen, helping you make the most of your time there.

This placement is likely to cost you in the region of £1500-1600 not including vaccinations and personal spending for a two month placement.

Tansen hospital can only accept 2 medical elective students at a time so get in touch as soon as you can!

Language electives:

Immerse yourself in the culture and gain proficiency in the language to enhance both your studies and your life.

We offer the opportunity for language students to join with the work that we are involved in in various countries round the world.

Our language electives in France offer the following options:

  1. Experience life in a professional office working environment in Paris. You would be able to help assist the work of the Baptist Union in France, live in a language school giving you a large range of social opportunities outside of working hours, and find a church to get involved with at the weekends.
  2. Be placed with one of 130 churches throughout France. The variety of churches is huge so we can work with you to provide the most suitable placement. We also have exciting work happening in Guinea, Mozambique, Spain, Paraguay, Brazil, Peru, and Thailand so whether you’re studying French, Portuguese, Spanish or Thai we have options for you!

Other student electives:

Working alongside a BMS mission worker or spending time with one of our partners involved in a project can bring your studies to life. Get in touch and we will see if we are able to provide a suitable short-term placement that allows you to put your skills into practice and experience cross-cultural mission. BMS has sent students on agriculture placements, Bible college placements and more.

How much?

BMS provides the set-up and administration, residential preparation in UK, pastoral support overseas and debriefing all free of charge. You will need to meet the cost of the placement including flights, visa, insurance, accommodation, living expenses, vaccinations and personal expenses. We will help you in putting together a placement specific budget.

If selected you will normally be invited to attend a week of cross-cultural training at IMC, our centre in Birmingham. These are held in January and July.
