World Aids Day 2008

Seeing the bigger picture – Fighting Aids in D R Congo

For the 63 million people that call the Democratic Republic of Congo home, life is neither simple nor stable. A five-year civil war killed around four million people; many more continue to be affected by conflict in eastern Congo. Two-thirds of the country’s population are malnourished. Many people never live to celebrate their 50th birthday.

Of all of Congo’s problems, the most persistent is Aids. The epidemic has produced one million orphans and the number of Congolese living with HIV and Aids continues to rise.

In such a desperate situation how can people live with hope and dignity? To answer that, you must see something of the bigger picture.

This World Aids Day (1 December), consider using our eight-minute video in your church. (Many churches mark it on the first Sunday in December.) The video explores what life is like for people with HIV and Aids in Congo, and shows how BMS partner Vorsi-Congo is restoring hope for many.
