"Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."
These words from the book of Proverbs (chapter 31, verses 8 and 9) were written approximately 3,000 years ago. Attributed to King Solomon, they clearly state that God has instructed his people to represent the interests of those who are unable to speak out and stand up for themselves, for whatever reason - whether due to poverty, lack of education, disabilities or because they are otherwise marginalised.
This command is a vital one, because issues of justice lie at the very heart of God, as shown in Micah 6, verse 8:
“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
The purpose of this booklet is to consider the biblical directive to be concerned about justice issues, particularly those relating to access to justice. We will be considering the following:
  • The Rule of Law.
  • The importance of justice to God.
  • The role of the State.
  • The call to be concerned for the marginalised in society.
  • The importance of advocacy.
  • The message of the New Testament.
  • A challenge for the Church.
