Transforming lives on four continents

Baptist Assembly, May 13-14

Trust me; hiring a car for a long journey is well worth it! This is what we decided to do this weekend; we arrived in Harrogate at 8:30pm, on Friday evening having driven up from Birmingham after school. We had quite a straightforward journey with one refreshment stop and only minor delays. We stayed at The Old Swan Hotel in the centre of the city, and were impressed with the facilities and service there. The children loved their section of the family room-quite spacious, so lots of room for playing! After a bath, story, prayer and a good night’s sleep (with the obligatory visit to the bar for the adults), we were ready to enjoy the first session at the Harrogate Conference Centre.

We were welcomed with a humorous Yorkshire dialogue, skilfully led in worship by Margaret Gibbs, and Dave (being cheered on by Ruth) shared a reading from Pentecost People, a resource to enable churches to engage with multicultural worship. Our new President, Diane Tidball encouraged us with a message about bringing God’s Kingdom on earth as in heaven. Although initially nervous, Jonathan really enjoyed Treasure Seekers, the children’s club for school age kids. He had one familiar face in the club and went on to make several new friends!

Lunch was eventful, as we chatted with several former overseas missionaries who have served in Peru. Their advice, wisdom and insight were wonderful; we have been further enthused for the journey ahead. We also met several church representatives from our link churches, some who we met in person only for the first time. That was very special as we felt the strength of their love and support. Dave took part in the afternoon seminar on Pentecost People, and the evening session was loud and exciting as we were commissioned for our overseas assignment alongside Jane Edwards, who is off to Mozambique, and Dave was welcomed into Fully Accredited Baptist ministry.

Prayer for Ministers and Mission Personnel   (Pheoebe is now sitting on the floor!)

The following morning, I enjoyed taking part in the Communion service, leading a prayer exercise about offering our bodies to God in worship; singing in other languages was lots of fun, and the prayer ministry was full of the dynamic power of the Holy Spirit! Then we set our sights on returning home. My highlight was connecting and reconnecting with the people of God in our family. Strengthening those bonds of love with words and deeds of encouragement will always have a deep impact on each of us as we live and breathe God’s presence. Well, the hired car has to go back now, and there is homework to be done!

Eph. 4:15-16 ‘but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love’. A big Amen to that!
