Transforming lives on four continents

An evening with Samuel Escobar

Posted by Dave and Michele Mahon at 10:30 on 9th December 2016

Michele and I were privileged to have an informal chat with Samuel Escobar, a leading Latin American theologian and Missiologist.

Samuel was one of the twelve speakers this year’s Catalyst Live 2016. Prior to him speaking in Birmingham, we were able grab a little time in the evening with him here at IMC.

In our preparation for our Mission to Peru next year, I’ve had a chance to read a few of books on Integral mission, including his book, ‘The New Global Mission.’ Escobar’s takes integral mission in a more challenging direction. Instead of excluding both religious and political structures, he looks at the Latin-American regions influence of the Catholic church, along with the current Protestant Christianity. He even reflects on the impact of the growing Pentecostal and charismatic movements. Very radical!

We were able to let him know our future plans, working alongside a team at the Nauta Integral Mission Training Centre next year. Samuel stressed the need for more support for Pastors in Peru. The overwhelming needs and pressures of the community are a great challenge for the Pastors. There is a real need for places for formal training, rest and support.

The next day was much more formal, as Samuel addressed the crowd at the beautiful St. Martin church. Here in the heart of the Bull Ring in Birmingham . Escobar encouraged us to reflect  on Paul’s letter to the Romans. Rather than looking through it for our doctrine as evangelicals,  the challenge was presented to read it to shape our mission and practice.
