All-age activities

Two activities for use in an all-age church service, linked to the theme, 'people movements'

Foxes have holes

Aim: To help all ages appreciate the value of discovering God as their refuge
Length of time: 5-10 minutes
You will need: A downloaded PowerPoint quiz of 'Animal homes' - click the link below.

Show the PowerPoint and ask people to match the home with the animal that appears on the screen.
Not all find literal homes but God himself wants to be their refuge: "The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble". (Ps 46: 1)  Jesus said, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." (Matt 8: 20)
Whilst God wants people to have an earthly home, actually no-one has a guaranteed place in this world but we are offered heaven as our real and permanent home. (Heb 11: 13-16)

Moving home

Aim: To understand the emotions of those who are displaced for a variety of reasons
Length of time: 5-10 minutes
You will need: A group of more than six people
Ask people to divide into small groups of two or three and share how often they have moved home in their life.
Encourage the groups to share how each person felt.
What were the good things and bad things about moving.
Include children as you explore how they may have missed their old friends and found it hard to start new schools and make new friends.
Feed back to the front and share how Jesus himself was homeless, a refugee as a baby (Matt 2: 13-15) and homeless later during his ministry (Matt 8: 20). Paul too describes himself as homeless. He was an outcast from the Pharisees and travelled from city to city: "To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless." (1 Cor 4: 11)
