BMS World Mission

Relief grant to Haiti

30/10/2008

A relief grant of US$10,000 (approx £5,700) has been given by BMS World Mission to the Baptist Convention of Haiti (CBH) and the Haiti Hospital Appeal (HHA) to assist 200 Haitian families affected by a series of hurricanes that left the already desperate country in far greater need.

Over 500 people were killed, one million were made homeless and 60 per cent of the national harvest was destroyed. BMS was contacted by the UK charity Haiti Hospital Appeal (HHA), which has good links with the Baptist Convention of Haiti (CBH).

This new charity, HHA, was initially established by Coney Hill Baptist Church in London. It is committed to serving the people of Haiti – one of the poorest countries in the world – through the provision of an urgently needed healthcare system.

HAA has developed a relief proposal with the Baptist Convention of Haiti to assist 200 children of the poorest families in Haiti by providing educational scholarship assistance at ten schools across the country.

This will be directed at families who, as a result of the hurricanes, find themselves unable to afford the annual fee of $48. The assistance will be paid to the schools, on behalf of named children, and monitored by CBH. Parents will be made aware that the support is only available for one year.
