God at work in Sicily (07/01/2010)

Sicily, a large Italian island at the southern end of the boot-shaped peninsula, has been home to one of the Action Teams since October 2009. They are based in Siracusa and have been getting involved with the local church there. The church has no young people and an uncertain future.

The Sicily Action Team (Ben, Danielle, Nick and Rhiannon) have been leading worship in the church and set up ‘the English Corner’ – a youth club for the local kids who hang out near the church. Through this the kids have been asking about church and even turning up at Sunday services!

Please pray with the Action Team for Andrea, Francesco, Federico, Dalila, Elisa, Anna, Martina, Fatima and all those who hang out on the street.

Sicily Action Team

A reflection from Ben

"I think for a long time we felt as a team that we weren't making as much difference as we would have liked. But the kids we are having fun with, hanging out with – they will never forget us. They will never forget those four British kids who struggle to string two words together in Italian (I speak only for myself there...). They might forget the score when we play football, they might forget about the home made twister mat, they might forget the ingredients for crispy cakes. But if we can show them just a tiny bit of God’s great love, they won't forget that.

A very wise young lady once reminded me that the miracles fade, but it's the love that lasts forever. Love has a lasting impact. God's love settles in the hearts of people, and if we can just bring a tiny drop of that love to the people here in Siracusa, then our mission, in my eyes, will have been a success. I'm not going to lie – I think we are well on our way to achieving that, especially with the kids. The friendships, the banter – it’s brilliant! God is good. Fact.
