BMS World Mission

Grant for Sumatra aid

07/10/2009

BMS World Mission has given an initial relief grant to assist Baptist partners in Indonesia respond to last week’s devastating earthquakes on Sumatra.

The money will support a team of seven relief workers, who are currently on the ground in Padang, help to distribute basic essentials to some of the thousands of people injured and made homeless by the disaster.

The grant of US$11,000 (approximately £6,900) has been given via Cyan International to Holistic Indonesia Mission (HIM), which is the relief and development arm of established BMS partner, the Indonesia Baptist Church Convention (KGBI).

KGBI director Ronny Welong wrote this morning to say, “The government has closed the rescue period and are moving onto the rehabilitation and reconstruction period, which includes food distribution as well as the basic needs of thousands of people who still live under the tents.

“The HIM team will get involved in this period of action in the next view days and by the end of this week, they will finish the first action plan for Padang. They will also prepare the next plan for relief work, God-willing.

Ronny adds, “Thank you for the continuing support and please keep praying for the team, as well as the situation in Padang.”

More than 1,000 people have died following the two powerful earthquakes in West Sumatra a week ago, but thousands more are thought to be missing, with many rural, remote areas having not yet received any aid.
