Pray for earthquake survivors in Sumatra (01/10/2009)

Hundreds of people have been killed and many more are seriously injured after a powerful earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Sumatra yesterday (30 September).

The 7.6-magnitude quake struck close to the city of Padang, the capital of West Sumatra province, which sits along a major fault line.

Homes, schools and offices have collapsed, with many people still buried under the rubble, and rescuers working hard to find survivors.

A second sizeable earthquake struck Padang early this morning, further hampering the relief effort.

BMS partner, the Indonesia Baptist Church Convention (KGBI) has over 20 church planters working on Sumatra, and whilst none of them are based in the affected province, they are expecting to be involved in relief and development work in the days, weeks and months ahead.

KGBI has responded to a number of similar crises in recent years, including the Boxing Day 2004 tsunami and another in early 2005.

We'll post news and prayer from our partners as and when we get it, but in the meantime, please remember the people of Sumatra in your prayers.

Pray for:

  • People living at the heart of the disaster zone, trying to find clean water, shelter and medical help, whilst mourning for family and friends who have lost their lives. May they know God's comfort and provision at this harrowing time.
  • Those leading the relief effort in Sumatra, both local people and those from NGOs and aid agencies. Pray that they would have clear minds and wisdom as they work long hours in difficult conditions.
  • BMS partner KGBI as it evaluates how it can respond most effectively to this disaster - may the church workers there find the resources they need to help others and seek the Father's guidance in all matters.
Help BMS respond to disasters such as this by donating to our Relief Appeal.
