BMS World Mission

Speak out about Gaza appeal

28/01/2009

Speak Out
The BBC has this week refused to air an appeal by the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) aimed at raising funds for humanitarian work in Gaza.
BMS World Mission is not a member of the DEC, but recognises and affirms the excellent work they do around the world and supports their desire to promote their Gaza appeal through Britain’s public broadcaster.

We believe the BBC has made a mistake in refusing to air the humanitarian appeal and we encourage our supporters to try to convince them to reverse their decision so that more funds can be raised to help those suffering where the need is greatest.

We also recognise that the BBC is not alone in refusing to air the DEC appeal and encourage supporters to make your concerns clear to Sky News as well.

You can contact the BBC and complain about their decision via their website by clicking here.

And you can write to them at this address:
BBC Complaints,
PO Box 1922
Glasgow
G2 3WT

You can phone on this number: 03700 100 222

Sky News does not have a complaints page, but they can be e-mailed at: news@sky.com and you can contact them by post at this address: Sky News, BSkyB, Grant Way, Isleworth, Middlesex, TW7 5QD

Please feel free to copy BMS ( campaigns@bmsworldmission.org ) in on any mails you send to either broadcaster and we will feature a selection on our website.

Responses to Sky and BBC

I believe that when it comes to helping those who are suffering from violence, those who are hungry an those who have lost their homes and positions to war, we must not allow any excuse to come in our way. I remember the words of Jesus in these times as he said, "What you have done to the least of my brothers and sisters you have done unto me." When it comes to helping those in need there are no excuses because there is always a way.

Some of your messages

Dear news @sky,

I want to ask, for the 1.1 million people in Gaza who are dependent upon aid to survive, that you would air the DEC Gaza humanitarian appeal. This would enable relief to those suffering on a huge scale.

I thank you for taking the time to read this email.

I welcome any response.

Best Regards

Mrs W

I am not impressed or persuaded by the official BBC response to the complaints that they did not broadcast the DEC Gaza Appeal. It is clear that far more of the innocent public died within Gaza than outside it, and that the government structure within Gaza had all but collapsed, while the Israeli Government remained strong. Thus offering humanitarian relief to Gaza is quite reasonable - refusing it demonstrates bias in itself, rather than avoids it !

With Regards

Mr D
