BMS World Mission

Telling it like it is

Last night, I woke up with the shock realisation that I could not breathe.

My brain appeared to have grown bored with the rigorous task of inhaling and exhaling! After a few minutes of gasping, I managed to convince my brain of the importance of this repetitive chore, and I began to breathe again.

Isn’t it awesome how God does not leave us under any illusion as to what he wants us to do with our time here on earth? I am certainly grateful; if my brain can’t cope with breathing on a regular basis, how would it cope with trying to work out the ultimate purpose of my existence as determined by our all powerful, all loving, just, omnipresent, eternal God?!

The Bible makes it clear – the great commission that Jesus left with his disciples is still his calling for us today:

“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey all I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28: 19-20)

What an exciting, international, multicultural, life-changing, community-impacting mission we have been called to!

As we go out with the great commission resounding in our ears like a giant gong, may we know that our mission is not to win the battle, the battle has already been won – Jesus is king. Our mission is to live in the knowledge of this victory, stay close to the Lord and do what he says. Wherever this leads you, may the world to which God has called you know this too.
