Gaza crisis – 29 January update

29/01/2009Sporadic violence has erupted since both sides declared tentative ceasefires, with an apparent surge in the last 36 hours.

Meanwhile, there has been widespread condemnation this week of the BBC and Sky News for not televising DEC's Gaza appeal. Click here to speak out and make your voice heard by contacting these broadcasters, asking them to reverse their decision.

19/01/2009A ceasefire has been agreed by Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

BMS Regional Secretary for the Middle East and North Africa, Gordon McBain, says: “We thank God for the ceasefire and welcome all moves towards peace, but recognise that now is when the real work of healing, reconstruction and helping victims of this conflict begins.

“We ask all British Christians and particularly BMS supporters to continue to pray for the traumatised and broken of Gaza, and to give to the BMS Relief Appeal, so that we can continue to help in situations like these.”

The International Committee of the Red Cross is calling the situation in Gaza a humanitarian crisis, as fighting continues between the Israeli military and Hamas cadres.

Comment from Gordon McBain, BMS Regional Secretary for the Middle East and North Africa:

“After our initial grant of $10,000, we anticipate giving further support to our partners working in Gaza, as and when they require it, thanks to the encouraging prayerful and financial support we’ve received from British Christians for our Relief Appeal.”

BMS World Mission has today given a relief grant of $10,000 (about £6,800) to local partner, Bethlehem Bible College to assist in buying emergency aid – food, blankets, clothes and shelter – to help suffering people.

More grants are likely to be made as the crisis deepens. Help us to be able to respond again.

Click here to go to the BMS Relief Appeal page and donate. You can be assured that your money will go directly to those in greatest need. Thank you.
