The small Baptist Union in Portugal is made up of 70 churches with a total of around 4,500 church members. The Union approached BMS World Mission in the early 1990s and two BMS couples worked in the country for several years from 1993. They were involved in pastor training and local church work in the Greater Lisbon area, and church planting in the Barreiro and Montijo regions. One of these couples, Barbara and Keith Hodges - who retired from long-term service in 2002 - returned to Portugal in August 2003 as BMS volunteers for a further four-year term working at the Portuguese Baptist Seminary in Queluz. BMS financially supports the work of the Seminary and church planting ministry among Russian-speaking immigrants in Portugal.
