Two BMS World Mission relief grants will help save and improve people's lives in the face of natural disaster in Asia.
Since the devastating tsunami in December 2004, the Asia Pacific Baptist Federation (APBF) has been co-ordinating a suitable response to future disasters.
It has already held four disaster mitigation workshops in Indonesia and India, with support from BMS, and now another relief grant of approximately £2,500 will help to organise two more workshops in 2008.
Each one is expected to involve 30 or so delegates, comprising church leaders and development workers of the APBF-affiliated conventions.
Afghanistan, meanwhile, is experiencing its harshest winter for decades. Unusually low temperatures and heavy snow have led to scores of deaths there and other neighbouring countries. The town of Herat, for example, normally does not have snow at all, so people are totally unprepared and unequipped.
The Afghan government has requested emergency aid from NGOs, including a BMS partner organisation, which is using a relief grant of £1,000 to support this vital relief effort.
David McLellan, BMS manager for mission partnerships, says, "Although these two grants are relatively small compared to some that we send, they will certainly be well-used by partners and will go a long way to ensure that many people in those parts of the world have a better quality of life".
Relief grants like these are only made possible through the generous support of individuals and churches. Click here for details of how you can give today.
